Transport Minister Pushes for Year-Round Late Night Train Services

UPDATE: Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien has just announced urgent discussions with Iarnród Éireann to expand late-night train services beyond the current holiday schedule. This move aims to enhance public transport accessibility throughout the year, responding to increasing demand for late-night travel options.

Currently, late-night trains, including the DART, operate only during the festive season, concluding around 2 AM on New Year’s Eve and returning to an 11:30 PM cutoff for the rest of the year. O’Brien emphasized the need for a safer, more efficient rail network, stating, “I’ve discussed that very thing with Iarnród Éireann,” highlighting that the government is investing €600 million next year to improve rail services.

In an exclusive interview, O’Brien noted that the late-night DART services have been “really well received,” and he is determined to see this initiative move forward. “It’s something I would like to see done,” he said, indicating a proactive approach rather than mere consideration.

However, there are challenges. A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann pointed out that the majority of infrastructure maintenance occurs overnight, making continuous late-night services difficult without increasing disruption during weekends. They noted that late-night services are typically reserved for peak times, such as major holidays and events.

O’Brien also touched on the introduction of 295 new DART carriages over the next couple of years, which he believes will “transform the passenger experience.” This investment, combined with plans for an additional 100 energy-efficient DART carriages, will significantly bolster the fleet, with a total investment in new electric trains reaching approximately €670 million.

When asked about potential congestion charges to ease traffic in the capital, O’Brien firmly stated, “Nope, there’s not. And I won’t be bringing in congestion charges.” He asserted that improvements in public transport accessibility would ultimately alleviate congestion.

As O’Brien continues to advocate for enhanced transport options, the discussion around expanding late-night train services is gaining momentum. The outcome of these negotiations with Iarnród Éireann could significantly impact night-time travel for residents and visitors in Dublin.
