Tributes Flow for Donegal Footballer Brighton Mafuta After Fatal Crash
Brighton Mafuta, a 36-year-old Donegal footballer and chef, tragically died in a road crash in Co Tyrone on the night of March 4, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 22:15 local time on the A5 in the Garvaghy area, involving a collision between a white Audi A6 and a silver Nissan Micra. Mafuta, who was driving the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three occupants of the Audi were transported to hospital for their injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is conducting an investigation and has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the accident to come forward.
Community and Football Tributes Pour In
Mafuta, originally from Zimbabwe, was well-known in local football circles and worked at the Snugborough restaurant in Letterkenny. The restaurant expressed its heartbreak on social media, stating they had “tragically lost our incredible, funny, loyal, hardworking chef and friend Brighton.” The owners, James and Jacqui, along with the Snugborough team, extended their condolences to Mafuta’s family and friends.
In a show of respect, the restaurant announced it would close for the weekend, reopening on March 5, 2024. The impact of Mafuta’s passing was also felt deeply within the football community. Donegal Town FC expressed their sorrow in a statement, recalling him as a “dear friend” and highlighting his contributions to the club, including being part of the squad that won the League title in 2013.
“Brighton showed great dedication, travelling afar to play despite not living nearby anymore. He had an infectious personality and got on fantastically with everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him,” the club remarked. A minute’s silence was observed before their match as a tribute to Mafuta.
Monaghan FC also acknowledged his impact, describing him as a “valued member of the team” during his tenure. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. RIP,” their statement read.
Calls for Road Safety Improvements
The A5, where the accident occurred, has been the site of 58 fatalities since 2006, following the approval of upgrades to the dual carriageway by Stormont. Last year, however, the High Court in Belfast quashed the project, citing violations of Northern Ireland’s Climate Change Act, leaving longstanding safety concerns unaddressed.
Daniel McCrossan, the SDLP MLA for West Tyrone, described Mafuta’s death as a “tragic loss” and reiterated calls for the urgent implementation of promised safety improvements on the road. The ongoing investigation into the collision remains a priority for local authorities as they seek to gather all pertinent information.
The community’s outpouring of grief and support for Mafuta’s family reflects the profound impact he had on those around him. As tributes continue to flow, many remember him not only for his contributions to football but also for his vibrant personality and dedication to his work and friends.
