Ukrainians Prepare for Prolonged Conflict, Says Amnesty Director
In a recent interview with FRANCE 24, Veronika Velch, the Director of Amnesty International in Ukraine, expressed the determination of Ukrainians to continue their fight for sovereignty. “Ukrainians are getting ready to fight as long as it would be needed,” she stated, highlighting the resolve of the population amid ongoing tensions.
Velch emphasized the deep desire for peace among Ukrainians, but she also pointed out a significant barrier to achieving it: trust. She remarked, “There’s very little trust in a peace that will come without justice.” This sentiment reflects the broader concerns regarding the need for accountability in any potential resolution to the conflict that has persisted since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent escalation in 2022.
Trust and Justice as Key Factors
The challenges facing Ukraine extend beyond military readiness. The quest for peace is interwoven with the need for justice, as many Ukrainians feel that any agreement made without addressing past grievances would be insufficient. Velch’s comments resonate with the broader narrative of a population seeking not just an end to hostilities but also a substantial reconciliation process.
Amnesty International has been actively involved in documenting human rights violations throughout the conflict. Their reports shed light on the plight of civilians caught in the crossfire and the need for international support to ensure justice is served.
Velch also noted the importance of global attention to the situation. With international efforts continuing to provide military and humanitarian assistance, the focus remains on how these actions can lead to a sustainable peace. The Ukrainian people, while prepared for a continued struggle, are holding onto hope that their sacrifices will not be in vain.
The Road Ahead
As the conflict shows no signs of abating, the resolve of Ukrainians strengthens. The comments from Velch serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in achieving peace in a region marked by historical grievances and ongoing violence. With the international community watching closely, the path forward remains uncertain, but the commitment of the Ukrainian people to fight for their future is clear.
The situation in Ukraine demands not only diplomatic efforts but also a concerted push for justice, ensuring that any future peace is built on a foundation of accountability and trust.
