Urgent Alert: Irish Drivers Face Rat Infestation Risk Now

ALERT: Motorists across Ireland are facing an urgent warning to inspect their vehicles for rodent infestations. Rentokil, the country’s leading pest control provider, has reported a concerning surge in callouts for rodent activity, prompting immediate action from vehicle owners.

New data from an internal survey of frontline pest technicians at Rentokil reveals that a staggering 84% have found rats inside vehicles, while 57% reported encounters with mice. Alarmingly, over 57% of these incidents occurred within just the past month, highlighting a growing crisis among drivers.

Vehicles are particularly vulnerable as rodents seek warmth and shelter during the colder, wetter months. Engine bays and hidden compartments in cars, vans, and trucks provide ideal nesting spots. Once inside, these pests can cause significant damage by gnawing through critical components such as wiring and insulation, potentially leading to breakdowns or even fire hazards.

Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager at Rentokil, stated, “We’re seeing more and more cases of rats infesting vehicles, and with colder weather, the risk increases significantly.” He emphasized that rats can enter through surprisingly small gaps, including grilles and vents, making every vehicle a potential target.

Motorists are urged to be vigilant for signs of infestation, including an unusual ammonia-like smell, scratching sounds, or evidence of nesting materials. “If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to act quickly,” Moore added.

The implications extend beyond individual drivers. Businesses operating vehicle fleets, particularly those in food delivery sectors, face operational disruptions and reputational damage from rodent-related issues.

As part of preventative measures, Rentokil recommends that vehicle owners conduct regular checks. Additionally, effective external hygiene practices, such as securing waste bins and sealing gaps around properties, can significantly reduce the risk of attracting rodents.

For enhanced protection, Rentokil offers its Flexi Armour proofing range, a durable rodent-proofing system designed to block entry points using specialized materials.

Drivers are advised to stay informed and act swiftly to mitigate the risk of infestations. For more information on identifying and preventing rodent issues, visit Rentokil’s website.

With the growing threat of infestations, it’s more important than ever for motorists to prioritize vehicle inspections and stay alert. Don’t let your car become a nesting ground—check it today!
