UPDATE: Angus Lambkin, a humanitarian worker from Belfast, is currently in Vanuatu providing critical aid following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck just before Christmas 2024. Lambkin, who has spent most of the past year in the Pacific region, is addressing urgent needs in the affected areas, particularly in Port Vila, where approximately 80,000 people have had their lives turned upside down.

The earthquake, which caused widespread destruction, has led to significant humanitarian challenges. Lambkin spoke with The Journal while on vacation in New Zealand, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “I was in Fiji for most of last year, and I went to Vanuatu just before the earthquake hit,” he said. The small island nation, located 1,750 km east of northern Australia, has a population of about 350,000.

Authorities are working tirelessly to assist those in need, but the scale of the disaster is immense. Many buildings in Port Vila have been reduced to rubble, and rescue teams are racing against time to locate survivors trapped in the debris. “We are coordinating with local authorities and various organizations on the ground to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most,” Lambkin noted.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Lambkin reported that the work environment in Vanuatu has been less chaotic than in previous crises he has managed. “There was a lot of preparation, and we had the necessary training and resources. However, we did not have an acute emergency context to deal with,” he explained.

In his role, Lambkin liaises with local governments during crises and coordinates with multiple organizations to address various aspects of the emergency response. His extensive experience spans several conflict zones and disaster-stricken regions, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and Afghanistan.

“Safety is a significant concern,” Lambkin remarked. “When we were in Vanuatu, there were ongoing tremors, which made it dangerous to work in certain areas.” Rescue operations are being hampered by the risk of further structural collapses.

International support is pouring in, with flights landing from Australia, New Zealand, and France, all ready to assist in the recovery efforts. Lambkin and his colleagues are at the forefront of these initiatives, ensuring that frontline workers understand the logistics and needs on the ground.

As the situation continues to develop, Lambkin emphasized the need for neutrality and impartiality in humanitarian efforts, especially in regions experiencing conflict. “We want our work to be recognized, and we need to communicate effectively with those in power to facilitate our operations,” he stated.
