Urgent Update: Killimor Man Claims Car Registered to 6-Year-Old
UPDATE: A shocking court case in Co. Galway has emerged, where a motorist claimed his vehicle is registered to his six-year-old daughter. During proceedings at Ennis District Court, Patrick Egan (36) insisted that the car he was driving during a Garda insurance check last November 26 in Scarriff belongs to his young daughter.
Judge Alec Gabbett described the situation as “bizarre” and questioned how a child could legally own a vehicle. Egan, a part-time security guard from St. Joseph’s Park, Killimor, was stopped while driving a 10LK registered car and faces a summons for driving without insurance.
During the hearing, Egan told the court, “That was her car,” when asked about the vehicle’s ownership. However, Sgt Brian Duddy revealed that insurance checks confirmed Egan was not covered to drive the car. Judge Gabbett emphasized that it’s impossible for a six-year-old to legally own a car, stating, “How did she sign the green log book?”
The judge expressed his skepticism, suggesting that Egan’s claim might be an attempt to avoid penalties. “A child can’t own a car by law,” Gabbett stated. “If I was cynical, I would say that the car is in your daughter’s name to avoid penalty points.” He highlighted the complications arising from a minor allegedly being the registered owner, noting that “it is hugely problematic” and “I can’t get a six-year-old into a witness box.”
Egan’s solicitor, Stiofán Fitzpatrick, agreed with the judge’s assessment, requesting an adjournment to provide Egan with proper legal advice. The case has been characterized as a “gormless type defense,” with Gabbett adding, “As far as I am concerned, the offense has been committed.”
The case will be adjourned to November 4 at the Killaloe District Court sitting in Ennis, where the next steps will be determined. This unusual incident raises significant legal and ethical questions about vehicle ownership and responsibility, especially concerning minors.
Stay tuned for further updates as this extraordinary case unfolds.
