UPDATE: A solemn vigil took place today at the site of the former Stardust nightclub in Artane, Dublin, marking 45 years since the horrific fire that claimed the lives of 48 young people. On February 14, 1981, a tragic blaze erupted, trapping patrons inside due to many exits being chained shut and windows barred, leading to countless injuries and heartbreak.

The vigil, attended by members of the Dublin Fire Brigade, An Garda Síochána, and families of the victims, was a powerful reminder of the lives lost that fateful night. As part of the ceremony, the names of the deceased were read aloud, followed by 48 seconds of silence to honor their memory.

In a significant development, an inquest in 2024 concluded that the deaths were a result of unlawful killing, prompting then Taoiseach Simon Harris to issue a formal state apology to the victims’ families. As part of a redress scheme announced earlier this week, a flat payment of €20,000 will be provided to those previously compensated in a 1985 tribunal, which has been met with criticism from lawyers representing the injured.

The emotional gathering also saw Claire Mould, wife of the late journalist Charlie Bird, who extensively covered the fire and its aftermath, lay a wreath in remembrance.

This vigil serves as a crucial moment of reflection and healing for the community, highlighting the need for continued support and acknowledgment of the tragedy’s lasting impact.

As the community comes together to remember, discussions are ongoing regarding the adequacy of the redress scheme and the broader implications for victims of similar tragedies. Authorities stress the importance of learning from the past to ensure safety and justice for all.

This developing story speaks to the heart of those affected and reminds us all of the enduring human impact of such tragedies. Stay tuned for further updates.
