Woman Secures Protection Order After Brother’s Violent Threats
A woman has successfully obtained a Protection Order following alarming threats made by her brother. The threats were documented in a video where the brother brandished a carpet knife while making menacing statements regarding her upcoming marriage. This incident occurred at a church where the woman is scheduled to wed her fiancé later this year.
During a session at the Ennis District Court, Judge Alec Gabbett reviewed the video evidence presented by the woman, who resides with her brother in their family home. The woman explained that her brother had recorded the video and uploaded it to a social media platform. In the video, he is heard saying, “I swear on that bible and I swear on my children, I am cutting lumps out of you – you will not get married inside in this Church.”
The threats escalated further as he added, “See this Church? You will not be getting married in it because I will come and slaughter you, and whoever wants to stand in front of you, I will slaughter them.” After viewing the footage, Judge Gabbett expressed concern for the woman’s safety and advised her to report the incident to the Gardaí, stating, “I would like you to go and talk to the Gardaí and play that to the Gardaí.”
The woman recounted her distressing experience, mentioning that her brother had aggressively approached her in a vehicle earlier that day, banging on the window as she made her way to court. Judge Gabbett highlighted the unusual circumstances surrounding her request for a Domestic Violence Protection Order, noting the severity of the threats made against her.
In light of the situation, Judge Gabbett suggested that the woman may also need to pursue a Restraining Order against her brother. “Effectively, he is threatening you with violence because you are getting married to someone he doesn’t like,” the judge remarked. The woman clarified that her brother has never met her fiancé.
The Protection Order was granted in the absence of the brother, who will have the opportunity to contest or consent to a Safety Order at a hearing scheduled for June. The woman expressed her relief at securing this legal protection, emphasizing the urgency of her situation as her wedding date approaches.
This case sheds light on the serious issue of domestic violence and the importance of protective measures for individuals facing threats. The court’s swift action underscores the critical need for safety in situations involving familial conflict, particularly when threats of violence are involved.
