UPDATE: A 52-year-old woman is set to sell her home to repay €303,000 she embezzled from renowned TV chef Martin Shanahan. Nessa Gilsenan appeared before the Cork Circuit Criminal Court today, where the urgent need for compensation was highlighted.

Gilsenan, formerly employed at Shanahan’s award-winning Fishy Fishy restaurant in Kinsale, Co Cork, pleaded guilty to nine charges, including theft and submitting false documents. The court heard that the thefts occurred over several years, from 2017 to 2022, during which Gilsenan manipulated the payroll system to siphon off funds for personal gain.

Between 2017 and 2022, Gilsenan’s deceit led to the appropriation of significant amounts: over €26,000 in 2017, nearly €55,000 in 2018, and over €75,000 in 2019. The following years saw her stealing €63,000, €69,000, and €15,000 respectively, accumulating a staggering total in theft.

Judge Helen Boyle was informed by Gilsenan’s defense counsel, Donal O’Sullivan, that she had already paid €15,000 in compensation. O’Sullivan requested an extension to allow Gilsenan time to sell her property, with proceeds directed towards compensating Shanahan. The judge agreed and remanded Gilsenan on bail, with sentencing scheduled for November 4, 2023.

Gilsenan’s actions have raised concerns in the local community, especially given Shanahan’s status as one of Ireland’s leading seafood chefs. His popular cookery program, Mad about Fish, has been a staple on RTE since 2009, resulting in best-selling cookbooks and subsequent television series.

As this case develops, many will be watching closely to see how Gilsenan’s financial restitution unfolds and what impact this incident will have on Shanahan’s esteemed culinary reputation. The outcome of the sentencing will be crucial for both the victim and the perpetrator, with the community eager for justice to be served.
