Deutsche Aircraft has announced a significant revival of the Dornier 328 with the introduction of the D328eco, a new regional turboprop designed with sustainability at its core. First entering service in 1993, the original Dornier 328 was developed by the esteemed aviation pioneer Claude Dornier. Today, approximately 150 of these aircraft are still operational worldwide, highlighting their enduring legacy.

Under the guidance of Chief Engineer Thomas Ahn, who was part of the original 328 team, Deutsche Aircraft aims to blend heritage and innovation in this new project. The D328eco will be manufactured in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich, and is designed not only for performance but also to incorporate modern environmental standards.

Combining Legacy with Modern Efficiency

The D328eco is positioned as a next-generation 40-seat regional aircraft, improving upon the original’s design while ensuring operational flexibility. Its fuselage is extended by approximately two meters to accommodate more passengers and enhance payload capabilities. The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT-S engines, which promise lower fuel consumption and extended maintenance intervals.

One of the standout features of the D328eco is its compatibility with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This capability is expected to facilitate a reduction of up to 95% in carbon dioxide emissions when using SAF compared to conventional fuels. The aircraft’s design emphasizes not only efficiency but also the ability to operate from short and unpaved runways, catering to regional routes that require such versatility.

The original Dornier 328 was known for its exceptional performance in short-field operations and high cruising speeds. It featured advanced systems for its time, including a digital glass cockpit and was recognized for passenger comfort and operational efficiency. Although production of the original model was limited to around 220 units before its program was sold, its influence remains significant in the aviation industry.

Deutsche Aircraft’s Commitment to Sustainability

Deutsche Aircraft is committed to reestablishing a robust aircraft-manufacturing capability in Germany. The firm has taken over the type certificate rights for the Dornier 328 and is dedicated to developing the D328eco as a product that embodies modern engineering and environmental responsibility. With a workforce of over 550 aviation experts from 40 nationalities, the company emphasizes values such as sustainability, collaboration, and excellence in design.

The D328eco aims to provide a mainline passenger experience with a spacious cabin, ergonomic seating, and efficient boarding processes. It is designed to operate efficiently on regional routes, covering over 98% of current turboprop missions and approximately 95% of regional jet missions in distance. The aircraft boasts a nominal cruise speed of about 324 knots and a service ceiling of 30,000 feet.

As the D328eco project progresses, the firm has not yet announced firm orders, and the expected entry into service has been pushed to late 2027. Nevertheless, the aircraft is poised to be a forward-looking solution for the regional aviation market, incorporating advanced technology and sustainable practices while retaining the core strengths of the original Dornier 328.

In summary, the revival of the Dornier 328 through the D328eco exemplifies a blend of innovative engineering and a commitment to sustainability, aiming to meet the evolving demands of regional air travel effectively. This next-generation aircraft is set to redefine what regional aviation can achieve, making it a significant development in the industry.
