Heathrow Unveils £1 Billion Security Upgrade, Enhances Passenger Experience
London Heathrow Airport (LHR) has completed an extensive upgrade of its security systems with the rollout of next-generation CT scanners. This significant investment of approximately £1 billion (about $1.35 billion) aims to enhance the travel experience for the airport’s 84 million annual passengers by streamlining the security process.
With the new scanning technology, travelers will no longer need to remove liquids and electronic devices from their hand luggage before security checks. This change is expected to significantly reduce wait times and improve overall efficiency at the airport, which serves as the busiest in the United Kingdom.
Major Benefits of the New Technology
The newly installed CT scanners are designed to process thousands of passengers each hour while maintaining high safety and security standards. As a result, the airport has lifted the 100 ml restriction on liquid containers, allowing guests to carry vessels up to two liters in their bags. This move is seen as a major convenience for travelers and has also positive implications for sustainability, as Heathrow will no longer distribute approximately 16 million plastic bags annually, which were previously used for liquid items.
Heathrow’s CEO, Thomas Woldbye, expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, stating, “Every Heathrow passenger can now leave their liquids and laptops in their bags at security as we become the largest airport in the world to roll out the latest security scanning technology.”
Part of a Broader Improvement Initiative
The introduction of the CT scanners is part of a wider £10 billion ($13.5 billion) private investment plan aimed at enhancing the overall passenger experience at Heathrow. This initiative is set to run from 2027 to 2031 and includes plans for additional retail space, improved lounges, and enhanced service levels. The goal is for 95% of travelers to rate their journeys as good or excellent.
This recent upgrade follows impressive operational performance, with Heathrow managing to process more than 97% of passengers in under five minutes at security checkpoints last year. The efficiency has solidified its position as one of the most punctual airports in Europe. Additionally, the incidence of lost luggage saw a significant decrease in 2025, with over 98% of checked bags being loaded onto the correct flights—a remarkable achievement given that the airport handled a record 84 million passengers that year.
The future looks promising for Heathrow as it continues to innovate and enhance its services, making travel smoother and more enjoyable for passengers worldwide.
