Israeli Airstrikes Kill 11 Palestinians, Including Three Journalists
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on March 6, 2024, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 Palestinians, including three journalists and two 13-year-old boys. This escalation of violence has cast further doubt on a ceasefire that has been in place for approximately three months. The strikes occurred as the journalists were en route to document the humanitarian situation at a newly established displacement camp in the Netzarim area of central Gaza.
The Palestinian health authorities reported that the three journalists killed were identified as Mohammed Salah Qashta, Abdul Raouf Shaat, and Anas Ghneim. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the attack, stating that these reporters were engaged in a “humanitarian, journalistic mission to film and document the suffering of civilians.”
In separate incidents on the same day, the two boys were killed in different locations within Gaza. One boy was reportedly struck by Israeli drones on the eastern edge of the Bureij refugee camp, alongside his father and another man. The other victim, Moatsem al-Sharafy, was shot by Israeli troops while gathering firewood in Bani Suheila, according to Nasser Hospital officials. His mother, Safaa al-Sharafy, recounted her son’s brief departure, saying he left in search of firewood to help provide a meal.
The fatalities have drawn sharp criticism from various organizations. The media watchdog Reporters Without Borders noted that at least 29 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza between December 2024 and December 2025. The organization also reported that nearly 220 journalists have lost their lives since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023.
The Egyptian Relief Committee, which sponsored the work of the deceased journalists, emphasized that their vehicle was known to the Israeli military. Mohammed Mansour, a spokesperson for the committee, stated that the vehicle had been clearly marked and identified. Video footage from the scene showed a burnt-out vehicle, with smoke rising from the wreckage and debris scattered across the ground.
In response to the incident, the Israeli military claimed that the airstrikes targeted individuals who were allegedly operating a drone associated with Hamas. They stated, “Following the identification and due to the threat that the drone posed to the troops, the IDF precisely struck the suspects who activated the drone.” The military also indicated that the details of the incident are currently under examination.
Since the ceasefire took effect in October 2023, Israeli forces have reportedly killed at least 466 Palestinians in Gaza, according to health authorities. This ongoing violence underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the continuing humanitarian crisis in the region.
The situation remains dire, with many families mourning their losses and grappling with the consequences of the escalating conflict. The international community continues to call for renewed dialogue and peace efforts to address the ongoing violence and humanitarian needs in Gaza.
