Pentagon Prepares to Deploy 1,500 Soldiers to Minnesota Amid Protests
The Pentagon has issued orders for approximately 1,500 active-duty soldiers stationed in Alaska to prepare for potential deployment to Minnesota. This decision comes in response to escalating tensions and widespread protests against the government’s immigration enforcement policies, particularly following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on January 7, 2024.
The U.S. Army has placed these units on prepare-to-deploy status, signaling readiness should violence arise during the protests. President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to authorize military action, should local officials be unable to manage the unrest. Protests intensified in Minneapolis following the incident involving Good, leading to confrontations between residents and federal officers.
Local Leaders Respond to Military Deployment Threat
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has voiced strong opposition to the potential military deployment, stating that it would likely worsen the already heightened tensions in Minnesota’s largest city. In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Frey remarked, “That would be a shocking step. We don’t need more federal agents to keep people safe. We are safe.” The mayor’s comments reflect a broader concern among local leaders about federal overreach in response to protests, which have largely remained peaceful.
The federal response has included the deployment of 3,000 immigration and border patrol officers to the area, a move criticized by many who argue it exacerbates distrust between the community and law enforcement. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, suggested on CBS’s Face the Nation that Frey should establish a “peaceful protest zone” to facilitate demonstrations.
National and State-Level Reactions
The Trump administration has pointed to concerns over alleged misuse of federal funds for social welfare programs in Minnesota to justify increased immigration enforcement. The President has specifically targeted the state’s community of Somali immigrants, which has prompted further criticism from local leaders and lawmakers.
Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen expressed concern about the implications of deploying military personnel, stating, “I think what he’d be doing is just putting another match on the fire.” The potential invocation of the Insurrection Act remains uncertain. While it provides the president with the authority to deploy military forces in domestic conflicts, active-duty troops can also be used for specific purposes such as protecting federal property without invoking the act.
The Pentagon has indicated that it stands ready to execute any orders from the commander-in-chief. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell affirmed this, stating, “The Department of War is always prepared to execute the orders of the commander in chief if called upon.”
As tensions continue to rise, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has mobilized the state’s National Guard to assist local law enforcement and protect the rights of peaceful demonstrators. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety confirmed this deployment via social media on Saturday.
The White House did not respond immediately to requests for comment regarding the military deployment. Local leaders and community members are left to navigate the complex dynamics of federal intervention and ongoing protests, underscoring the broader national debate surrounding immigration enforcement and community safety.
