Plane Crash Claims Lives of Publishing Heir, Pregnant Wife, and Pilot
A tragic plane crash on March 15, 2024, in San Marcos, Guatemala, resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including prominent publishing heir Harald Undrum, his pregnant wife Judith Mazariegos, and a local football player who was piloting the aircraft. The incident has raised concerns and drawn attention to aviation safety in the region.
Harald Undrum, who was born in London, was a member of the wealthy Schibsted family, known for founding the influential Norwegian media group, Schibsted. He was the adopted heir to Christian Schibsted, a pioneer in the publishing industry who established the media powerhouse that includes notable publications like VG and Aftenposten. Undrum, who had relocated to Spain with his wife and their three children, worked as a truck driver for several years after leaving the spotlight of high-profile financial dealings.
Reports indicate that the couple was visiting Guatemala, but the reasons for their trip remain unclear. Tragically, Undrum’s wife, Judith Mazariegos, was only 26 years old and was expecting at the time of the crash. The couple’s loss has resonated deeply within their community and among those who knew them.
In addition to Undrum and Mazariegos, a local doctor and the football player pilot were also killed in the accident. Local media have not disclosed the names of the other victims, but it is understood that the pilot was well-known in the area. The crash has prompted an investigation, with authorities aiming to determine the cause of the incident and to gather more details about the flight conditions at the time.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway has acknowledged the incident, confirming they are “aware of media reports” regarding the death of a Norwegian citizen in the plane crash. As the investigation unfolds, many are left to reflect on the lives lost and the impact of this tragedy on their families and friends.
Undrum’s life had been marked by financial challenges, including significant debt and involvement in high-profile legal cases in the early 2000s. Despite these hurdles, he maintained a connection to his family’s legacy, which has been integral to Norway’s media landscape for generations. As of 2022, Undrum was reported to have a registered fortune of NOK 60 million, underscoring his position within the Schibsted dynasty.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen tragedies that can disrupt families and communities. The aviation authorities in Guatemala are expected to release further information as investigations continue, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
