Royal Mint Unveils Concorde Coin to Celebrate 50 Years of Supersonic Travel
The United Kingdom’s Royal Mint has launched a new commemorative 50 pence coin, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Concorde’s first commercial flight. This milestone was marked with an unveiling event at the Aerospace Bristol Museum, where the iconic aircraft is currently displayed. The coin features a reverse design depicting the Concorde in flight, set against a split-flap departure board, symbolizing the aircraft’s remarkable legacy in aviation history.
Collectors and aviation enthusiasts can purchase the coin, priced at £15 (approximately $20January 21, 1976, taking off from London Heathrow Airport to Bahrain.
Celebrating Innovation and Engineering
The release of this coin reflects the Royal Mint’s ongoing commitment to bridging the past and present, as it continues to honor British achievements in innovation. Notably, the engineers behind the Concorde also contributed to the design of a 50 pence coin introduced in 1969. The uncirculated coin serves primarily as a commemorative piece rather than standard currency, designed by the agency Osborne Ross.
The reverse side of the coin prominently features the name “Concorde” along with two depictions of the aircraft, elegantly situated around the split-flap departure board motif. This collaboration involved not only the Royal Mint but also British Airways and Airbus, emphasizing the collective effort to celebrate this aviation milestone.
Accompanying the coin is packaging that details the Concorde’s development, its commercial flights, and the aircraft’s retirement in 2003. Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coins at the Royal Mint, expressed the significance of this release, stating to the BBC: “Concorde represents the very best of British innovation. The design perfectly captures Concorde’s grace and power, and we’re thrilled to mark this significant anniversary with a coin that honours both the aircraft and the engineers whose genius made supersonic travel a reality.”
A Legacy of Supersonic Travel
The commemorative coin not only celebrates the Concorde’s anniversary but also its historical impact on aviation. The supersonic jet operated by British Airways and Air France reduced travel times significantly, allowing for non-stop flights from London to destinations such as Bahrain and later, routes to the United States, including Washington Dulles and New York JFK Airport.
Both airlines had seven Concorde airframes each, and while sonic booms were restricted to over-ocean flights, the aircraft became a symbol of luxury and speed. The Concorde faced competition from the Soviet Union’s Tupolev Tu-144, while Boeing attempted to develop the B2707, which was ultimately scrapped before any prototypes were built.
The Concorde’s operational history faced a tragic event in July 2000 when Air France Flight 4590 crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the loss of 109 lives. Following this incident, commercial services were suspended until late 2001, and all remaining Concordes were retired by 2003. Today, several Concordes remain on display in museums across Europe and North America, preserving the legacy of this extraordinary aircraft.
The Royal Mint continues to expand its collection of uncirculated coins, which includes upcoming releases such as the 2025 Monopoly 50p coin and the 2026 Angel £5 commemorative coin. The Concorde coin, made of Cupro-Nickel and weighing approximately 8 grams, measures 27.30 mm in diameter and features designs by Martin Jennings on the obverse side.
In commemorating the Concorde, the Royal Mint not only celebrates a remarkable aircraft but also the ingenuity and innovation that continues to inspire future generations in the field of aviation.
