Russian Strikes Claim Lives of 10, Including Children, in Kharkiv
A series of drone and missile strikes launched by Russia overnight on March 25, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, including two children, in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks targeted various infrastructure, causing significant damage and casualties across multiple regions of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that Russian forces deployed an extensive arsenal of 480 drones and 29 missiles, aiming primarily at energy sector facilities and railway infrastructure nationwide. In a statement shared via the Telegram app, Zelenskiy called for a robust response from international partners, emphasizing the need for continued support against what he described as “savage strikes against life.” He reiterated that Russia remains determined to dismantle both residential and critical infrastructure, urging allies to sustain air defense and weapon supplies.
Despite Ukrainian air defense units successfully intercepting 453 drones and 19 missiles, the toll of the attacks was severe. Reports indicate that nine missiles and 26 attack drones successfully struck 22 different locations. In Kharkiv, a Russian ballistic missile hit a five-storey residential building, leading to the tragic loss of life and extensive damage. Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv, confirmed the fatalities and highlighted the distressing impact on residents.
One survivor, identified only as Hanna, described her harrowing experience, stating, “When we arrived here 20 minutes after the explosion, I thought I was going to have a stroke. It was ordinary people who lived there. What were they targeting?” The emotional toll of the attacks was evident as she expressed gratitude for her own safety and that of her family.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that the strikes were part of a broader operation aimed at Ukrainian military-industrial complexes and energy facilities, as reported by Interfax. The attack on Kharkiv also resulted in injuries to 15 individuals and damage to 19 residential buildings. Additional strikes impacted commercial and administrative buildings, as well as electricity distribution lines and vehicles.
In the capital city of Kyiv, three people sustained injuries following the strikes on an energy infrastructure facility, which resulted in heating disruptions for 2,806 residential apartments across four districts. Yulia Svyrydenko, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, confirmed the scale of the damage and the emergency measures implemented. The national grid operator, Ukrenergo, announced that emergency power cuts were initiated in seven regions as a direct response to the attacks.
Further complicating the situation, Russian forces also targeted four railway stations and other railway infrastructure in central Ukraine, along with port facilities in the southern region of Odesa. These strikes set fire to containers filled with vegetable oil and caused damage to a grain warehouse, exacerbating the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.
The ongoing conflict continues to have devastating impacts on civilian life in Ukraine, with international calls for support growing louder as the situation evolves.
