In a landmark achievement, the Stanford Cardinal defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 86-78 on March 6, 2024, in South Bend, Indiana. This victory marks Stanford’s first-ever win against Notre Dame in their basketball history, showcasing a strong performance by the Cardinal throughout the game.

The match saw a standout performance from Ebuka Okorie, who led all scorers with 24 points. Despite facing multiple deficits of ten points, Notre Dame fought back to close the gap to 79-76 with just 58 seconds left on the clock. In the critical moments that followed, Jeremy Dent-Smith emerged as a key player, contributing seven points down the stretch to secure Stanford’s victory.

The Cardinal, now boasting a record of 19-11 and 8-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, have won three consecutive games. They demonstrated remarkable shooting accuracy, hitting 57% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc. A.J. Rohosy added 11 points and five rebounds, supporting the team’s offensive efforts.

For Notre Dame, which fell to 13-17 with a 4-13 conference record, Jalen Haralson led the team with 19 points, including an impressive 13-for-15 performance at the free-throw line. Teammates Cole Certa and Braeden Shrewsberry contributed 17 and 14 points, respectively, while Certa also tallied two steals.

The game began with Notre Dame securing an early 9-6 lead, largely thanks to Brady Koehler‘s contributions. However, Stanford quickly shifted momentum with Okorie’s offensive drive, aided by 3-point shots from Benny Gealer and Dent-Smith, taking a 18-13 lead midway through the first half.

The Cardinal maintained control, leading by as many as ten points near the end of the first half. This allowed them to enter halftime with a score of 45-37. After a brief scoring drought in the second half, Stanford’s Aidan Cammann ended the dry spell, allowing the Cardinal to regain a solid lead at 61-51.

In the final minutes, Stanford continued to fend off Notre Dame’s attempts to close the gap, with Okorie extending the lead to 75-65 with just over three minutes remaining. The Cardinal’s effective shooting and defensive efforts ultimately led them to a historic win, solidifying their place in the ongoing season.

As Stanford celebrates this milestone victory, the Fighting Irish will look to regroup as they continue their season in search of improvement.
