Ireland Launches Groundbreaking Trials for Chronic Pain Relief

A consortium of medical technology and digital healthcare companies, along with researchers from universities, has initiated a series of world-first clinical trials aimed at providing long-term relief for individuals suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. This innovative approach could significantly alter the landscape of chronic pain treatment in Ireland, offering patients access to breakthrough therapies much earlier than previously possible.

The partnership, which includes CrannMed, Salaso Health Solutions, the University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials, and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, has secured funding of €6.6 million from the Government of Ireland. The announcement was made by Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, as part of the latest awards from the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund.

Details of the RECAP Project

The initiative, known as the RECAP project (Resorbable Embolization for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain), aims to combine two complementary technologies to enhance treatment outcomes for patients. The clinical trials, coordinated by the University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, will provide participants with an innovative pain treatment developed by CrannMed, alongside a recovery program from Salaso, supported by clinical specialists.

The first trial will involve administering an injection that selectively blocks blood flow to the painful area. This method is designed to reduce inflammation and target the nerve endings associated with chronic pain. Participants in the study will also engage in a structured recovery process that focuses on building strength and enhancing the resilience of musculoskeletal tissues.

An additional aspect of the trials includes the use of an AI-enabled self-management platform, which will monitor patient recovery in real-time, providing insights and support during their rehabilitation journey.

Potential Impact on Pain Management

The consortium is optimistic about the potential of this innovative approach to transform chronic pain management. Liam Farrissey, Chief Executive Officer of CrannMed, stated that assembling such a high-quality consortium from within the Irish ecosystem is a rewarding achievement. He emphasized the advantage of offering treatments to Irish patients earlier, which, if successful, could fundamentally change chronic pain treatment protocols.

Aoife Ní Mhuirí, CEO of Salaso, highlighted the benefits of having treatment and recovery options available closer to home, noting that this approach saves time and resources for both patients and the healthcare system. She remarked, “The approach is more sustainable, more accessible for patients, and has the potential to set a new global standard for pain management.”

Professor Fidelma Dunne, Director of the Institute for Clinical Trials at the University of Galway, expressed her belief that the project could revolutionize treatment for chronic joint and muscle pain. She noted that the innovative treatment and clinical trial framework would enable effective, long-term pain relief without resorting to surgical procedures or addictive medications.

The consortium asserts that the combined benefits of the treatments and technologies being evaluated in these trials are expected to outperform traditional steroid injections, which currently represent the standard of care for chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions.
