The president of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Francie Gorman, is leading a protest to Brussels by tractor alongside his 11-year-old son, Tom Gorman. The duo set off from the Irish Farm Centre in Bluebell, Dublin, on Monday morning, joined by a small convoy of tractors. Their journey includes a ferry ride from Rosslare to Dunkirk, with plans to arrive in Brussels ahead of a significant protest organized by COPA COGECA on Thursday.

Gorman emphasized the importance of this demonstration, describing it as one of the largest organized by COPA COGECA, the European farm umbrella body. He stated that IFA staff had “worked tirelessly” to prepare the Irish delegation. “I want a farming future for Tom the same way thousands of other farm families all over Ireland and Europe want their farm to be viable for the next generation,” he noted. The trip aims to communicate this critical message to EU institutions during the protest.

Demonstration Coincides with EU Council Meeting

The protest in Brussels is strategically timed to coincide with an EU Council meeting that will address the upcoming EU budget, particularly concerning the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP). Gorman expressed concern about initial budget proposals, stating they could leave a “significant gap” in funding for the CAP program after 2027.

“We will be standing with our colleagues from across Europe to deliver a strong and united message that an adequate budget is needed across the twin pillars,” Gorman added, underlining the importance of sufficient funding for the agriculture sector.

In addition to budget concerns, the IFA has voiced criticism of the European Commission’s proposed Mercosur trade deal, which involves Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Gorman’s comments reflect a growing unease among European farmers regarding the implications of the trade agreement for local agriculture.

As the protest approaches, the participation of farmers from various regions highlights their collective commitment to advocating for a sustainable future in farming. The journey by tractor not only symbolizes their dedication but also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by agricultural communities throughout Europe.
