Veteran TDs Urge Immediate Release of Jim Gavin Review
Three senior members of the Fianna Fáil party have called for the immediate release of the long-awaited review into the party’s recent presidential election campaign. TDs Willie O’Dea, former Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghail, and Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher issued a statement demanding swift action from the party leadership, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin. They emphasized that ongoing leaks and media coverage of the report are causing significant damage to the party’s reputation.
The trio highlighted the need for all TDs and senators to have adequate time to read the report before a special parliamentary meeting scheduled for later this week. They advocated for a “frank and informed discussion” during the meeting, although details regarding the timing of this gathering remain unclear. Typically, these meetings occur on Wednesday evenings; however, Martin will be attending a crucial European Council meeting on Ukraine that night.
O’Dea expressed urgency, noting that this week marks the final sessions of the Dáil before the Christmas break. He stressed that the report must be released promptly to avoid leaving the matter unresolved during the holiday period. Reports suggest that Jim Gavin, who conducted the review, has not indicated any legal issues with publishing the report in its current format. Consequently, the three TDs assert that there should be no barrier to making the findings public.
The ongoing controversy surrounding the review threatens to overshadow significant events for the party, particularly as Fianna Fáil prepares to celebrate its centenary. The leaders’ insistence on transparency reflects a broader concern within the party regarding maintaining unity and addressing the challenges it faces as it moves forward.
As the situation unfolds, the pressure is mounting on Fianna Fáil to act decisively. The members’ clear call for immediate publication of the review indicates a recognition of the need for accountability and clarity at this critical juncture.
