Oliver Callan Introduces New Character Siobhan McSweeney on RTE
Renowned comedian Oliver Callan is set to unveil a surprise new character in his annual comedy special, Callan’s Kicks, airing on December 31, 2023, on RTE. This year, the spotlight will shine on actress and presenter Siobhan McSweeney, known for her role in the hit series Derry Girls and as the host of the reality show The Traitors.
According to an insider who spoke to Extra.ie, Callan has dedicated time to perfecting a character inspired by McSweeney. “Oliver has a few new characters in store this year,” the source revealed. “Siobhan McSweeney is now part of his repertoire, and he has spent the past few months getting his Derry accent perfect.”
McSweeney’s recent success as the host of The Traitors has caught Callan’s attention. Her engaging style and charisma on the reality show left a lasting impression, prompting Callan to incorporate her into his satirical sketches. This year’s edition of Callan’s Kicks promises a humorous retrospective of the year’s most significant events, both in Ireland and beyond, showcasing Callan’s distinct comedic flair.
Retirement of a Fan-Favourite Character
Alongside the introduction of McSweeney, Callan will bid farewell to one of his most beloved characters, Pascal Donohoe. With Donohoe taking on a significant role at the World Bank, Callan feels it is time to retire the character that has become a staple of his comedic repertoire. An insider shared, “Oliver is pretty much devastated, but he’s had to retire Pascal. He did a fantastic Pascal, but now that he’s headed off for a big job, it’s time to say goodbye.”
Callan continues to engage audiences with his daily show on RTE Radio 1, while also preparing for his highly anticipated New Year’s Eve special. The one-hour program not only serves as a comedic highlight of the festive season but also provides a satirical look back at the events of the past year in Callan’s signature, sardonic style.
As this year comes to a close, viewers can look forward to a fresh perspective from Oliver Callan and the introduction of Siobhan McSweeney as he continues to evolve his comedy, bringing laughter and insight into the absurdities of contemporary life.
