European Leaders Rally Behind Greenland Amid Trump’s Envoy Appointment
European leaders expressed their support for Greenland on October 10, 2023, following the announcement that U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to the self-governing Danish territory. This move has reignited tensions surrounding Greenland’s status as a territory rich in natural resources and strategic importance.
Trump stated at a press conference that the U.S. “has to have Greenland for national security.” Landry, in a post on X, indicated that he plans to visit Greenland to persuade its residents to consider becoming part of the United States. “There is no better flag for freedom and opportunity than the flag of the United States,” he added, emphasizing his intention to share that message with the people of Greenland.
In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen summoned U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery to express his discontent over the development. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described Landry’s appointment as “completely unacceptable,” highlighting the Danish government’s firm stance against any perceived attempts to annex the territory.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed interest in Greenland. Previous attempts to purchase the island were met with resistance from both Danish and Greenlandic politicians, who have consistently asserted that Greenland is not for sale. Trump had even suggested the possibility of using military force to secure the territory earlier in his presidency.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister of Greenland, lamented the ongoing geopolitical maneuvers over his homeland. He stated, “Sad, because the U.S. president once again expressed a desire to take over Greenland. With such words, our country is reduced to a question of security and power. That is not how we see ourselves, and that is not how we in Greenland can or should be spoken about.”
In a further development, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt revealed that Howery had recently visited Nuuk but failed to mention Trump’s plans to appoint Landry. “The Government of Greenland has not been informed that the United States would appoint a special envoy to Greenland,” Motzfeldt stated in a press release. She emphasized that Greenland’s future is determined by its people, asserting, “We are not Danes. We are not Americans, and we do not want to become one. Our land is ours and others will not control or own it.”
European leaders quickly rallied in support of Greenland. French President Emmanuel Macron posted that “Greenland belongs to its people,” while highlighting Denmark’s role as the protector of its sovereignty. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reinforced this sentiment, noting that territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law. “We stand in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland,” she wrote on social media.
As the diplomatic landscape evolves, the situation underscores the complexities of international relations regarding Greenland. The island’s strategic location and its abundant resources continue to draw attention, making it a focal point for global powers.
