Genetic Study Links Irish Giants to Ancient Ancestor Discovery

A recent genetic study sheds light on the enduring legends of giants in Irish folklore, suggesting a scientific basis for these myths. Conducted by a team led by Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Queen Mary University of London, the research involved collaboration with University of Exeter, University of Belfast, University College London, and 17 other institutions. The study focused on patients with the hormonal disorder acromegaly, which can lead to gigantism, and involved testing DNA samples from the general population in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Researchers identified a specific mutation—named AIP (R304*)—that was notably prevalent among patients in Mid-Ulster, Northern Ireland. They discovered that all Irish patients with this mutation, which includes 81 carriers across 18 families, share a common ancestor who lived approximately 2,500 years ago. Among these carriers, 31 individuals have developed acromegaly, with more than half of them—18 patients—experiencing gigantism.

Linking Folklore to Genetics

The implications of this research extend beyond medical insights. The team noted that their findings could provide answers to the rich tapestry of Gaelic myths about giants in Ireland. The legend of the Giant’s Causeway and other tales are now being examined through a genetic lens. Notable historical figures, including Charles Byrne, who is often referred to as the “Irish Giant,” had their remains studied, revealing they too carried the same genetic mutation.

Professor Sian Ellard from the University of Exeter Medical School, part of the collaborative effort, highlighted the significance of the research. She pointed out that Irish folklore is replete with stories of giants, and the genetic evidence supports previous observations made by pioneering anthropologist James C. Prichard in 1826, who noted the unusual prevalence of tall individuals in Ireland compared to Britain.

Potential for Early Detection

The study not only enriches the understanding of Irish folklore but also has practical implications for health management. The researchers indicated that their findings allow for the screening of family members who may carry the gene, enabling early detection of acromegaly. Notably, their larger study revealed that 24% of seemingly unaffected gene carriers showed early signs of the disease, prompting immediate medical intervention for some.

The researchers estimated that 436 carriers and 86 affected individuals might currently be undiagnosed, potentially residing in Ireland or among those with Irish ancestry. This discovery underscores the possibility of preventing the onset of gigantism and reducing the associated health risks.
