During the Requiem Mass, celebrated by Father Joe Gormley, mourners gathered to honor Gallagher’s legacy as a dedicated educator at St Brigid’s College, where he served as Head of Business Studies. He was also a respected representative for the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO), where his commitment and professionalism were recognized as invaluable.

Fr Gormley highlighted Gallagher’s deep emotional ties to Burt, recalling how Dermot cherished his childhood experiences that shaped his values and love for family. “He asked for this funeral Mass to be celebrated here, a place where he found joy and connection,” said Fr Gormley. Dermot was a devoted husband to Carol, a loving father to Éimhear, Fionn, Éabha, and the late baby Órla, and an adored grandfather to Cadán.

Gallagher’s contributions to the education sector extended beyond the classroom. He was the secretary of the Derry Trades Union Council and actively involved in union activities, where his passion for supporting fellow teachers was evident.
