Israel Warns of Iranian Assassination Plot Against Syrian Leader

Israeli military intelligence has issued a warning indicating that Iran is reportedly planning to assassinate Ahmad al-Sharaa, the interim President of Syria. This revelation comes as both Syrian and Israeli officials prepare to resume US-mediated security talks in Paris, aimed at stabilizing tensions in the region. The Israeli assessment suggests that al-Sharaa is under threat not only from Iran but also from various hostile entities, as Tehran perceives him as a figure diminishing its regional influence.

Syrian authorities have not formally addressed the allegations regarding the Iranian assassination plot, though the Interior Ministry recently dismissed rumors of an attack against al-Sharaa as “completely false.” This denial follows a history of threats against al-Sharaa since he led the ousting of former leader Bashar al-Assad, with previous attempts on his life foiled by Syrian authorities.

In a notable display of normalcy, al-Sharaa was seen shopping in downtown Damascus on the evening of March 15, 2024, signaling that he remains active and secure amid these threats. Al-Assad Loyalists Fund Militia Recruitment

The warning from Israeli intelligence coincides with reports of former regime loyalists, including top generals and allies in exile, allegedly financing militia recruitment within Syria’s Alawite minority. Investigations have revealed that Major General Kamal Hassan and Rami Makhlouf, Bashar al-Assad’s cousin, are establishing rival factions to recruit fighters. Reports suggest they are attempting to channel between $1.2 million and $6 million into these efforts, with claims of funding anywhere from 12,000 to 54,000 fighters.

Both Makhlouf and Hassan have a history of wealth accumulation linked to their connections to the former regime, with Makhlouf once controlling a business empire valued between $5 billion and $10 billion. His operations reportedly include the illicit drug trade, particularly captagon, a synthetic amphetamine that has become a significant financial resource for the regime and its supporters.

The ongoing conflict has left Syria’s coastal provinces, including Latakia and Tartous, as key areas of military activity. Rival factions are reportedly competing for control of underground command centers established during al-Assad’s rule, which contain weapons and logistical resources.
