Community Mourns Kilmacrennan Developer Edward McGettigan

The Kilmacrennan community is in mourning following the peaceful passing of prominent businessman and developer Edward McGettigan. Known for his significant contributions to local development, McGettigan’s legacy includes numerous projects that have shaped the county. He died at home, surrounded by his family, on March 14, 2024, leaving behind a profound impact on both the community and his family.

McGettigan will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also as a devoted family man. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret McGettigan. His son, Laurence McGettigan, expressed the family’s pride in his father, describing him as a man whose life was “defined by hard work, generosity, and love.” Laurence noted, “A contractor his entire life, he helped build not only homes and businesses, but also strong relationships and lasting friendships.”

With a family of ten children, 43 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, Edward’s legacy extends beyond his professional life. Each family member reflects the values he instilled. His only surviving sibling, Susan, shared a deep bond with him, highlighting the love that surrounded him in his final days. “Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing he passed peacefully, wrapped in the love of his family. He will be forever missed and forever honoured,” Laurence added.

Funeral Arrangements and Community Tributes

Edward will repose at his home on March 15, 2024, from 10:00 to 22:00. The funeral Mass is scheduled for March 16, 2024, at 11:00 in St. Columba’s Church, Kilmacrennan. Family time will be observed on the morning of the funeral. In order to accommodate attendees, parking will be available at the car park opposite Thatch Cottage, Kilmacrennan (Eircode F92 YD92), with a shuttle bus operating to and from the wake.

Tributes have poured in from various members of the community, reflecting on Edward’s kindness and willingness to assist anyone in need. He is deeply regretted by his family, including his children: Marie (Gerry), Laurence (Eileen), Colette, Michael (Joanie), Brendan (Marian), Fidelma (Seamus RIP), Declan (Donna), Adrian (Mary), Martina (Pete), and Raymond (Tracey). His numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren are also mourning his loss.

Edward’s passing is felt not only within his family but throughout the Kilmacrennan community. The lives he touched and the relationships he built will remain as a testament to his character. He is also remembered for the loss of his grandchildren, Donna, Joseph, and Christopher, as well as his son-in-law Seamus, and his parents, Eamon and Mary.

As the community gathers to pay their respects, Edward McGettigan will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, friendship, and community development. May he rest in peace.
