Kilkenny Firm Partners with NEG8 Carbon to Advance Air Capture Tech

An important agreement has been established between NEG8 Carbon and Prochem Engineering to initiate an engineering study for Ireland’s first full-scale carbon capture system. This collaboration aims to define detailed project specifications for NEG8 Carbon’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, which focuses on reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels.

The full-scale DAC module, designed to capture and attract 50 tonnes of CO2 annually, will be constructed at NEG8 Carbon’s headquarters in Waterford. This initiative is part of a broader effort to assist industries in achieving their net-zero emissions targets by employing innovative technologies.

Engineering Partnership Marks Progress

The agreement with Prochem Engineering represents a significant milestone in the development of NEG8 Carbon’s unique electrostatic DAC technology. This approach aims to make carbon capture more affordable, effective, and scalable, facilitating commercial deployment on a global scale.

NEG8 Carbon specializes in developing novel electrostatic techniques for capturing CO2 from the atmosphere. The process involves drawing in air and directing it over a specifically designed sorbent system, which effectively captures CO2 molecules. The captured carbon can either be permanently stored underground or transformed into climate-neutral products, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Dr. John Breen, Chief Technology Officer at NEG8 Carbon, emphasized the importance of the 50 tonnes per annum unit, stating, “This unit will serve to validate NEG8’s system as a leading engineered carbon capture technology that will support industries and governments in their drive to net-zero and beyond to negative carbon emissions.”

Michael Kent, Director at Prochem Engineering, expressed pride in contributing to this pioneering carbon capture initiative. “This landmark project is designed to address the urgent challenges of global warming and environmental sustainability,” he stated.
