Actor Jamie-Lee O’Donnell expressed her support for the rap trio Kneecap, stating she felt “no nervousness” while appearing in their music video for “Sayōnara.” This statement comes shortly after a court dismissed a terrorism charge against Kneecap‘s member, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, although the UK Crown Prosecution Service has since filed an appeal against that decision. Despite the ongoing legal issues, O’Donnell remains steadfast in her belief that there is “no issue” with the band’s actions.

In the music video, O’Donnell portrays a fatigued office worker who escapes her mundane job in a van adorned with the slogan “Free Mo Chara.” Speaking at a Screen Ireland event on March 23, 2026, she commented on the absurdity of the terrorism charge, highlighting her familiarity with the complex political landscape in Northern Ireland. “I was born in the ’80s so the political back and forth and being told you are a problem and on the wrong side is something I am very used to,” she said. O’Donnell emphasized her pride in maintaining her integrity and principles, even when faced with opposition.

Upcoming Projects and Economic Impact

O’Donnell is set to star in the upcoming film Skintown, which was launched at Trinity College Dublin as part of Screen Ireland’s ambitious slate of 87 productions for 2026. Among the featured projects is Power Ballad, directed by John Carney and featuring American actors Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Carney has described his film as a “ludicrous comedy,” which is scheduled to premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival in March.

Another anticipated production is Frank Berry‘s documentary, The Lost Children of Tuam, which focuses on the uncovering of information related to the deaths of children at the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam. Animation projects were also highlighted, including Cartoon Saloon‘s 2026 feature film, Julián, which explores the “power of self-expression,” according to director Louise Bagnall.

During the event, John Kelly remarked on the surprise of receiving an Oscar nomination for his short animated film Retirement Plan, stating that he was unaware of any predictions surrounding the accolade.

Record-Breaking Production Spending in Ireland

According to analysis shared by Screen Ireland, production companies contributed a record €544 million to the Irish economy in 2025, reflecting an increase of 26 percent from the previous year. This spending encompasses costs for cast, crew, accommodations, catering, and various other inputs, underscoring the growing significance of the film industry in Ireland.

Desireé Finnegan, chief executive of Screen Ireland, described the figure as “outstanding,” attributing much of this success to the Section 481 tax credit for film and television. This initiative allows productions to claim 32 percent of their spending on goods, services, cast, and crew while filming in Ireland, provided they meet specific cultural and industry development criteria.

Finnegan emphasized that the majority of Screen Ireland’s funding is allocated to local projects, showcasing the richness of Irish culture on screen. “If you look at literature, music, theatre, and across film and TV, there’s just an incredible wealth and depth of talent,” she noted, highlighting the vibrant creative landscape in Ireland.

As the music video and O’Donnell’s upcoming projects continue to gain attention, the intersection of art and political expression remains a significant theme within the Irish cultural narrative.
