Five Teams Awarded €2.6 Million in Urgent Energy Innovation Challenge
UPDATE: Five innovative research teams have been awarded a total of €2.6 million under the co-funded Research Ireland – Gas Networks Ireland Innovation Challenge, announced just today, February 23, 2026. This funding aims to propel advancements in renewable gas production and energy system integration, marking a significant step forward in Ireland’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.
The selected teams are tasked with developing cutting-edge solutions focused on improving the efficiency and commercial viability of biomethane and biohydrogen production. Their work will also enhance the integration of renewable gases into Ireland’s energy system while utilizing AI-based technologies for intelligent gas network diagnostics. This initiative is crucial as Ireland strives to meet its ambitious climate goals.
Dr. Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, emphasized the urgency of these projects, stating, “The research these teams are undertaking will support Ireland on the path to decarbonisation. Cross-sector collaboration is vital for Ireland to meet its national commitments to be climate-neutral by 2050.”
