Kilkenny Student Named Solicitor of the Future After Law Programme
A Transition Year student from Kilkenny, Cathal O’Donovan, has been recognized as a Solicitor of the Future after completing a comprehensive legal education programme hosted by the Law Society of Ireland. The programme took place in Dublin from February 17-20, 2026, and included 40 students from across the country.
The initiative aims to inspire students interested in pursuing a career in law. It featured an immersive, activity-based format with workshops led by legal practitioners, guest speakers, courtroom exercises, and a dedicated careers seminar. Students from ten counties participated, reflecting a diverse representation of schools.
Programme Highlights and Objectives
Places in this year’s programme were allocated through a lottery system, with 20% specifically reserved for students from socio-economically disadvantaged schools. The Law Society’s President, Rosemarie Loftus, emphasized the importance of this initiative in fostering interest in legal careers.
“This initiative encourages students to consider a career in law while providing a real insight into the work of practising solicitors,” Loftus stated. She noted that the programme is designed to offer a comprehensive understanding of the legal profession and the various paths it can take.
The week-long experience included insights from human rights practitioners and newly qualified solicitors, as well as visits to the Criminal Courts. Loftus remarked that students gained valuable knowledge about the legal world and the rewarding nature of a solicitor’s career.
Support for Aspiring Lawyers
The programme also highlighted practical supports, such as financial grants available through the Law Society’s Access Scholarship. Loftus assured participants that regardless of their background or circumstances, opportunities in the legal field are accessible to all.
“By taking part in the Law Society’s Solicitors of the Future programme, students learn how the law affects everyday life, which builds awareness of justice, legal processes, constitutional principles, and the rule of law,” she added. This knowledge is not only beneficial for those who wish to become lawyers but is valuable for every citizen.
As students like Cathal O’Donovan engage in these transformative experiences, they are equipped with the tools and insights needed to navigate potential legal careers, contributing to a more informed society.
