Irish Minister Urges Public to Report Fuel Price Gouging NOW
URGENT UPDATE: Residents in Ireland are being urged to report fuel price gouging as Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke addresses skyrocketing energy costs. In a decisive move, Burke has engaged with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to launch an immediate investigation into alarming reports of price hikes affecting home heating oil, petrol, and diesel.
“Citizens are encouraged to reach out to the CCPC via [email protected] or call their helpline at 01 402 5555 to report any suspicious price increases,” Burke stated. He reassured the public that these complaints will be treated with urgency and rigor, as the CCPC has the authority to impose fines of up to €10 million for serious breaches or 10% of a company’s turnover.
As part of his efforts, Burke will meet with industry representatives and energy market suppliers on Friday, October 20, 2023, to address his concerns over the sharp increases in fuel prices, which he noted do not align with current wholesale trends.
Experts are sounding alarms about the potential impact of global conflicts on energy prices. Professor Aoife Foley from the University of Manchester warns that if oil markets experience severe shocks, petrol prices could soar by as much as €0.70 per litre. In a more moderate scenario, prices could still rise by €0.29 per litre. Diesel could see similar surges, with potential increases of €0.81 per litre under severe conditions or €0.34 per litre in moderate situations.
For households relying on heating oil, the stakes are high. Current prices are around €0.99 per litre, but in a worst-case scenario, this could nearly double to €1.95 per litre.
The urgency of these developments resonates deeply with the public as many families face increased financial pressure. With winter approaching, the potential for higher fuel costs adds to the anxiety of households already grappling with rising living expenses.
As the investigation unfolds, the CCPC’s findings could lead to significant policy changes or consumer protections. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any price gouging immediately.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops, and make sure to share this vital information with your networks.
