Aer Lingus Plans Manchester Base Closure, Seeks to Minimise Job Losses

Aer Lingus is set to close its Manchester base, halting ticket sales for transatlantic flights beyond March 31, 2024. The airline has initiated consultations with staff to explore options aimed at minimising potential job losses, which could impact approximately 200 employees. This base, operational since 2021, has struggled to achieve competitive profitability compared to the airline’s long-haul operations out of Ireland.

The decision comes as Aer Lingus continues to assess its operational strategy in light of ongoing challenges. In a statement, the airline pointed out that while the Manchester base has been profitable, its operating margins “significantly lag” those of other long-haul operations within the company. Aer Lingus operates flights from Manchester to destinations including Barbados, Orlando, and New York.

Staff Consultations Underway

Chief Executive Lynne Embleton has emphasized the commitment to consulting with staff and relevant unions. These discussions, which began in November 2023, aim to address the future of the Manchester operations and explore any potential for redundancy minimisation.

In a circular shared with employees, Aer Lingus acknowledged the efforts of the Manchester team, especially during challenging operational periods, such as the Christmas season. The airline is committed to exploring various options that could include phased reductions in operations, opportunities for internal transfers within Aer Lingus, and potential severance packages for affected employees.

The circular stated, “During the consultation processes, the airline has explored various options for increasing the margin at the Manchester base, but unfortunately to date these options do not appear to be viable.”

Approximately 40 pilots are currently employed at the Manchester base, with around 30 expected to return to operations in Ireland if the closure proceeds. The remaining pilots were hired specifically for the UK operations.
