Fuel Allowance Scheme to Conclude Next Month After €532 Boost
Households across Ireland are bracing for the conclusion of the Fuel Allowance scheme next month, following an increase in support designed to alleviate the effects of the ongoing cost of living crisis. The increase comes as fuel prices have surged, with reports indicating that the cost of home heating oil has effectively doubled in response to international events, including the recent military actions involving the United States and Israel’s operations in Iran.
The Fuel Allowance is a vital support mechanism for many, benefiting approximately 460,000 recipients nationwide. This weekly payment helps households manage their heating costs during the winter months, offering financial relief to those most in need. The scheme operates from late September through April each year, with the final payment for the 2025/26 Fuel Allowance season scheduled for the week beginning April 6, 2025.
In January, the weekly Fuel Allowance rate was raised from €33 to €38, and for those opting for the lump sum payments, the total was increased to €532, a notable rise from the previous €462. Payments can be received either weekly or as two lump sums, depending on the recipient’s choice.
The scheme underwent enhancements this year, including the addition of recipients of the Working Family Payment starting in March. Those eligible for this payment may receive backdated support from January, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing fuel poverty amid rising costs.
To qualify for the Fuel Allowance, applicants must reside in Ireland and be responsible for heating costs. Only one payment is granted per household, meaning that if multiple members qualify, the individual receiving a qualifying social insurance payment, such as the State Pension (Contributory) or Invalidity Pension, should apply first. It is essential to note that applications submitted after the start of the Fuel Allowance season will not be backdated.
Individuals do not need to reapply annually as long as their circumstances remain unchanged and they continue to receive the same social welfare payment. Applications can be submitted online through a MyGovID account or via paper form, which is available at local post offices or by calling 0818 200 400. Those under 70 should complete the NFS1 form, while individuals aged 70 and over should use the NFS2 form.
As the Fuel Allowance scheme prepares to conclude for the season, many households will be looking ahead to the next round of payments, which are set to resume in late September. The government’s ongoing support remains crucial as families navigate the financial pressures caused by escalating living costs.
