Irish Households Sip Nearly 1 Million Bottles of Prosecco This Christmas
Irish households consumed almost one million bottles of prosecco during the Christmas season in December 2024, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The figures indicate that Ireland imported approximately €2.1 million worth of prosecco, which amounts to over 966,000 bottles. This impressive tally nearly doubles the value of imported champagne, which stood at €1.4 million and represented around 88,000 bottles.
The preference for prosecco over champagne during the festive period highlights a significant trend among Irish consumers. One key factor driving this choice is the price difference, as a bottle of champagne can cost nearly twice as much as a bottle of prosecco. This disparity arises from the complex production process of champagne and the specific grape varieties used, making prosecco a more accessible option for festive celebrations.
Growing Market for Sparkling Wines
While prosecco retains its status as the sparkling wine of choice in Ireland, other varieties such as Crémant and Cava are also gaining popularity. This shift reflects changing consumer preferences as people seek alternatives to traditional champagne.
The CSO’s release of seasonal statistics goes beyond beverage consumption, revealing various aspects of holiday spending. In December 2024, Irish consumers imported a total of 36 tonnes of Christmas lighting worth approximately €882,000. Additionally, €2.1 million was spent on decorative Christmas items, including baubles, while €264,000 was dedicated to electric toy cars and trains. Notably, more than €1.1 million was spent on dolls’ prams, pedal cars, and trikes, further illustrating the festive spending habits of Irish families.
The appetite for entertainment also shone through, with nearly €15 million worth of video game consoles imported in the same month. This surge underscores the growing demand for gaming as a popular holiday gift.
Travel and Marital Trends
Travel activity surged during the holiday season, with approximately 9.2 million people passing through Irish airports in October, November, and December 2024. Foreign visitors accounted for 3.9 million overnight stays in December alone, averaging 9.9 nights per visitor.
The latest statistics also highlighted personal milestones, with 1,670 couples tying the knot in December. Interestingly, Friday emerged as the most popular day for weddings. Additionally, the festive spirit welcomed 82 newborns on Christmas Day, comprising 39 girls and 43 boys.
The seasonal data from the CSO provides valuable insights into the consumer habits and trends shaping the Irish market, reflecting a vibrant and dynamic landscape during the festive season.
