Minister O’Brien Launches Survey for Derry-Dublin Air Service

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien has initiated a Market Sounding Survey as part of preparations for a new air service connecting Dublin and Derry, scheduled to commence in 2026. This air service, funded by the Exchequer under a Public Service Obligation (PSO), aims to improve connectivity for the North West region of Ireland.

As the Department of Transport advances the necessary groundwork for the service, the survey is designed to gather feedback from potential users. The insights gained will help shape key specifications for the service, including aircraft type, capacity, service frequency, timing, and fare structures.

Minister O’Brien emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable communities across Ireland. He stated, “As many stakeholders have observed, the North West is relatively underserved by transport links.” He noted that the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Building our Shared Island program, which includes a commitment to enhance air connectivity between Dublin and Derry.

Survey Details and Stakeholder Engagement

The Market Sounding Survey invites responses from various stakeholders, including potential passengers, to determine the optimal aircraft, service frequency, and fare options. Minister O’Brien expressed the importance of stakeholder engagement, stating, “This service will give Derry and North East Donegal a subsidised connection to Dublin, alongside the existing Donegal–Dublin PSO route. Together, these services will improve access to Dublin and international travel for the North West, supporting economic growth and tourism.”

The government has also committed €600 million towards upgrading the A5 road transport corridor, further enhancing connectivity in the region. It is anticipated that a tender for the PSO air service will be released by the Department of Transport early in the new year, with operations expected to begin later in 2026.

The deadline for survey submissions is set for January 31, 2026, and interested individuals can participate through the provided online platform.
