Kilkenny’s St Canice’s Site Set for Major Housing Development

A proposed masterplan for the St Canice’s/HSE site in Kilkenny is poised to transform the 60-acre area into a significant housing development. Both the Mayor, Cllr John Coonan, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Maria Dollard, who previously submitted proposals regarding the site in 2021, welcomed the latest developments.

“We should seize the opportunity,” stated Mayor Coonan, emphasizing the importance of protecting the local Pitch and Putt club that currently operates on the site. Cllr Dollard commended the council’s leadership in developing the masterplan, highlighting the inclusion of active travel measures aimed at enhancing connectivity in the area.

Cllr Joe Malone also underscored the significance of the proposal, calling it a “golden opportunity” while advocating for the incorporation of facilities for youth in the development. Meanwhile, Cllr David FitzGerald characterized the site as “pivotal,” recommending that housing should be prioritized for the elderly and individuals with special needs.

“This project will have very long-lasting impacts for Kilkenny,” he remarked, adding that it should integrate seamlessly into the city rather than function as a standalone structure.
