New Toll Fees Launch on Dublin Motorways This Thursday
Motorists in Dublin will face new toll charges starting Thursday, March 15, 2024. The adjustments primarily affect the Dublin Port Tunnel and several major motorways, impacting daily commuters and heavy goods vehicles alike.
Overview of New Toll Charges
Beginning on the morning of March 15, the toll for southbound traffic using the Dublin Port Tunnel will increase by €1 during peak hours, specifically between 06:00 and 10:00 on weekdays. This rise aims to better manage traffic flow and demand during busy periods.
In addition to the Port Tunnel, the M50 motorway will see an increase of €0.10. This change applies to vehicles equipped with a tag or video account. For heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) exceeding 10,000 kg, the toll will also rise by €0.10 if they are registered with a tag or video account. However, unregistered HGVs without these accounts will experience a more significant increase of €0.20.
Other motorways affected by the new toll fees include the M4 Kilcock to Kinnegad and M3 Clonee to Kells, both of which will implement a €0.10 increase immediately. Notably, there will be no increase for cars using the eight public-private partnership (PPP) toll roads, which include the M1, M3, M4, N6, M7/M8, M8, N18 Limerick Tunnel, and N25 Waterford.
Reasons Behind the Changes
The adjustments to the tolling arrangements at the Dublin Port Tunnel are primarily designed to manage demand effectively during peak traffic hours. Authorities aim to ensure that HGV movements to and from Dublin Port remain unimpeded by additional congestion, thereby facilitating smoother operations for commercial transport.
As these changes take effect, drivers are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly. Awareness of the new toll structures will be essential for all motorists, particularly those who frequently travel through these key transit points.
