Alcohol-Free Music Sessions Launch to Celebrate Local Talent
The inaugural Old Chapel Sessions took place in Fobairt na Rosann on March 10, 2024, marking a significant moment in the local music scene. This event, organized in collaboration with Over the West Online Radio, aims to provide a safe, non-alcoholic, and family-friendly environment for showcasing original music talent in the region.
Set within the intimate atmosphere of a chapel, the evening unfolded like a traditional seated concert. This arrangement allowed performers to present their music without the interference of bar noise or other distractions. Local country artist Conor O’Donnell served as the host, contributing his expertise in professional lighting and sound to enhance the audience’s experience.
The concept for the Old Chapel Sessions emerged from discussions between Maria McCormack of Over the West and Eirú, building on Over the West’s commitment to alcohol-free events, including the annual Over the West Fest on Arranmore Island. This initiative represents a crucial development in fostering grassroots music within the Rosses and surrounding communities.
Local business support was evident, as the event received backing from MACE Local Funding. Notable attendees included Bridie and Charlie Sharkey of MACE Dungloe, highlighting the community’s dedication to arts initiatives. The evening also featured refreshments and a hamper draw, with Bridget McGonagle announced as the winner, further promoting community engagement.
The diverse lineup included artists such as Breegeen Bonner, Yankton Carothers, Meabh Cannon, Owen Curran, Karen McLaughlin, Aidan O’Donnell, Ania Hornowski, and High Frequency. A standout performance came from Owen Curran, who captivated the audience with three original songs that celebrated the Rosses, showcasing a musical range from country to rock.
Reflecting the inclusive ethos of the event, the stage welcomed both emerging artists and seasoned performers, allowing them to share a supportive platform. By creating a dedicated environment for original music without the presence of alcohol, the Old Chapel Sessions not only celebrate local talent but also actively nurture it, marking an important cultural development for the Rosses and the wider Donegal music community.
The next Old Chapel Sessions are scheduled for April 10, 2024. Artists interested in performing are encouraged to reach out to Fobairt na Rosann or Over the West Online Radio to get involved in this exciting initiative.
