Royal Mint Commemorates Spice Girls with Special Coin for ‘Wannabe’ Anniversary
The UK’s Royal Mint has announced the release of a commemorative coin celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls’ iconic debut single, “Wannabe.” This special edition £5 coin marks a significant moment in pop culture history, as it honors a song that not only topped charts but also shaped a generation.
Released in 1996, “Wannabe” quickly became a global phenomenon, reaching number one in 37 countries. It propelled the Spice Girls to international stardom and sparked a cultural craze known as “Spicemania.” The song’s infectious energy and message of female empowerment resonated widely, making it a defining anthem of the 1990s.
As part of the Royal Mint’s “music legends” coin collection, the new coin features a unique design by artist Ffion Rees. The artwork captures the silhouettes of all five band members: Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell-Horner (Ginger Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). This specific release allows fans to choose their favorite Spice Girl, with five different packaging designs, each strictly limited to 15,000 coins worldwide.
Lucy Mackenzie, director of digital and product concept at the Royal Mint, emphasized the cultural impact of the Spice Girls, stating, “The Spice Girls didn’t just dominate pop music; they defined the 90s.” She added that the special packaging celebrating each member makes this release one of their most collectable offerings to date.
The Spice Girls expressed their gratitude through a statement: “It’s a huge honour for us to be celebrated by the Royal Mint and follow in the footsteps of some true music icons.” They noted that 2026 would be a special year for them, marking the anniversary of both their debut single and album. The band highlighted the significance of being the first female group to receive their own coin, celebrating a milestone for “Girl Power.”
The Royal Mint’s ongoing music legends series has previously featured notable artists such as Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Dame Shirley Bassey, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney.
Collectors and fans can purchase the Spice Girls coin starting on March 3, 2026. Prices for the coins range from £18.50 (€21) for uncirculated versions to £10,535 (€12,000) for a 2oz gold proof coin in a £200 denomination.
This limited-edition coin not only commemorates a significant musical achievement but also serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Spice Girls and their influence on popular culture.
