Bill Burr Stars in New Irish Comedy “Bender” Set for 2026
Bill Burr is set to star in the upcoming Irish coming-of-age comedy titled Bender, which marks the feature film debut of writer Adrien Cunningham. This project promises to blend humor and heartfelt storytelling, drawing on Cunningham’s own experiences growing up in Dublin.
The film is described as a mix of Superbad and Derry Girls, capturing the essence of teenage life in late 1970s Dublin. The narrative follows an American record-store owner, portrayed by Burr, who embarks on an unconventional mission to help a group of misfit teenagers navigate their first romantic encounters during the significant gathering for the Pope’s visit.
Shooting for Bender is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026, with direction by Adam Bernstein, an Emmy award-winning director recognized for his work on acclaimed series such as Better Call Saul, 30 Rock, and Fargo. Bernstein’s expertise in crafting compelling narratives in the television landscape is anticipated to bring a unique vision to this film.
Burr, who recently received two Emmy nominations for his Hulu special Bill Burr: Drop Dead, has also made waves on Broadway. He debuted in March 2025 in David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, performing alongside notable actors Kieran Culkin and Bob Odenkirk. His involvement in Bender is expected to draw significant attention, given his established presence in both stand-up comedy and dramatic performances.
The production of Bender will be managed by D6 Entertainment, co-founded by Cunningham and actress Lesley-Ann Brandt, known for her role in Lucifer. The company is collaborating with the Irish production company ReflektorMedia to bring this story to life.
Cunningham’s insights into the cultural landscape of Ireland during the late 70s will likely infuse the film with authenticity and depth, appealing to both local audiences and international viewers. As the film gears up for production, anticipation builds around how it will resonate with those familiar with the era and those new to its narrative.
With Burr’s star power and Cunningham’s fresh perspective, Bender is poised to be a significant entry in the genre of coming-of-age films, addressing themes of identity, belonging, and the trials of adolescence in a unique setting.
