Claire Byrne has revealed that she has yet to read the books gifted to her by former finance minister Paschal Donohoe, despite the gifts sparking considerable online discussion after their presentation last year. In a recent interview discussing her transition to Newstalk, Byrne recounted the moment from October 2022 when Donohoe presented her with the books following her final Budget phone-in on RTÉ Radio One.

During the interview, which occurred after her switch to Newstalk, Byrne laughed off the notion of her unopened gifts. “No. I shouldn’t admit that,” she said, acknowledging that she had not yet delved into the contents of the bag. The books were intended to commemorate her last appearance on the station after years of hosting the Budget programme.

Byrne explained the context of the gift, stating, “So, every year I would do the Budget phone-in on RTÉ Radio One, which is the day after the Budget, and people phone in with their questions and comments to the finance ministers.” She described how, during the live broadcast, Donohoe presented her with a bag containing two books, which she did not examine closely at the time due to the ongoing broadcast.

The exchange became a topic of discussion online, with many speculating about the appropriateness of the gift. The Department of Finance later confirmed that the books were purchased personally by Donohoe and Jack Chambers, the minister of state, as a gesture to mark Byrne’s departure from RTÉ.

Byrne reflected on the ensuing discussion, noting, “I think it was just him marking the end of my tenure on that programme by gifting me the books. But because there was such a kerfuffle, I haven’t read the books.”

Among the books, one title reportedly explores economics through the lens of pop star Taylor Swift. “I think one is about Taylor Swift-driven economics, and one is a more pure economics book,” Byrne commented, indicating she may need to approach the reading with a focused mindset.

The likely title referred to by Byrne is The Glory of Giving Everything: The Taylor Swift Business Model, a non-fiction work published in July 2022. The book aims to reveal successful business strategies inspired by Swift, who has publicly been described by Donohoe as “the leading artist of our era.”

Byrne’s transition to Newstalk has seen her take on the weekday 9am to 12pm slot, previously occupied by Pat Kenny. This change marks a new chapter for Byrne after her long-standing role at RTÉ, and her reflections on the gift from Donohoe provided a light-hearted glimpse into her past experiences on air.

As the conversation around the gift continues, Byrne’s admission emphasizes an interesting intersection between politics, media, and popular culture in Ireland. The unopened books, now symbols of a momentous occasion, remain untouched as Byrne navigates her new role at Newstalk.
