Investigation Reveals Only Four Complaints About Trans Women in England

A recent investigation conducted by the advocacy group TransLucent has uncovered that there were only four recorded complaints regarding trans women utilizing single-sex facilities across 382 public authorities in England over a three-year period. This study, which spanned from 2022 to 2024, involved the submission of hundreds of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to various public bodies managing essential services such as hospital wards, local authority toilets, and domestic abuse refuges.

The findings from TransLucent’s investigation indicate that instances of documented issues involving trans individuals in single-sex spaces are virtually nonexistent. Specifically, between 2020 and 2022, the organization conducted three rounds of FOI requests directed at NHS Hospital Wards, inquiring about complaints from cisgender women regarding the presence of trans women in their wards. Out of 102 requests, no hospitals reported any complaints of this nature.

In December 2023, TransLucent expanded its analysis by reaching out to 130 acute trusts and 50 mental health trusts. Only one complaint was noted among the 157 trusts that provided substantial responses, and this was not classified as a serious incident by the concerned trust.

Insights into Domestic Abuse Refuges

TransLucent also scrutinized domestic abuse refuges, focusing on how these services navigate the inclusion of trans women while ensuring the safety of other residents. Their research highlights that established risk-assessment procedures, which include mixed models of accommodation and national placement systems, facilitate the accommodation of trans women without compromising safety.

Throughout its investigation, TransLucent received 382 responses, revealing that only four complaints were related to trans women in single-sex facilities. Notably, one of these complaints pertained to policy rather than a specific instance involving an individual trans person. The organization concluded that the concerns surrounding trans individuals accessing single-sex services predominantly exist within political discourse rather than reflecting actual problems in service delivery.
