Doctor Urges Men to Stop Three Habits to Prevent Serious Health Risks
Men are often reluctant to seek medical care, a trend supported by various studies. According to research, men are significantly less likely than women to consult healthcare professionals when health issues arise. In a recent video, US doctor Amro Mahmoud outlined three critical habits that he believes all men should abandon to improve their long-term health and reduce the risk of serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
Monitor Blood Pressure Regularly
Dr. Mahmoud emphasizes the importance of regularly monitoring blood pressure, stating, “If you don’t know your blood pressure, that’s a problem.” He highlights that high blood pressure can silently inflict damage on the heart, brain, and kidneys without noticeable symptoms. He advises men to check and track their blood pressure consistently, as it can lead to severe health problems like strokes or heart attacks.
According to the Irish Heart Foundation, normal blood pressure is classified as below 120/70. Readings above this threshold should prompt a consultation with a healthcare provider.
Control Cholesterol Levels
The second recommendation from Dr. Mahmoud focuses on cholesterol management. He notes that many men maintain unhealthy eating habits, thinking their fast metabolism will protect them. “You’re a grown man eating like you’re still in college,” he remarked. “Atherosclerosis also has a fast metabolism. It builds up slowly, silently, then one day introduces itself as a heart attack at 6:30 in the morning.”
Atherosclerosis occurs when arteries narrow due to cholesterol buildup, which can obstruct blood flow and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Mahmoud encourages men to adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, and stay informed about their cholesterol levels to mitigate these risks.
Prioritize Cancer Screenings
Finally, Dr. Mahmoud urges men not to overlook the importance of regular cancer screenings. He particularly stresses the need for colon and prostate screenings, as well as lung cancer screenings for smokers. “Stop saying I’ll deal with it later,” he cautioned. “Later’s undefeated. Get your physical.”
In Ireland, there are currently three national cancer screening programmes aimed at early detection and prevention. By staying proactive about health check-ups, men can significantly enhance their chances of detecting potential issues early.
Dr. Mahmoud’s straightforward advice serves as a reminder for men to prioritize their health. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, managing cholesterol levels, and undergoing necessary screenings can lead to improved health outcomes and a better quality of life.
