A delegation from the Gweedore-based organization, Cancer Flights & Services, met with Darragh O’Brien, the Minister for Transport, to address critical flight service issues affecting cancer patients in Donegal. During the meeting, which took place on October 25, 2023, campaigners highlighted the urgent need for same-day and midday flights on the Donegal–Dublin Public Service Obligation (PSO) route. They also called for aircraft to be stationed overnight at Donegal Airport to ensure timely morning services for patients with appointments in Dublin.

The meeting comes as preparations are underway for schedule changes under a new PSO contract, set to take effect on March 29, 2026. These changes will eliminate the current afternoon flight, which is crucial for patients attending morning medical appointments at Dublin hospitals. After the discussions in the Dáil, campaigners reported that while the Minister did not provide an immediate solution, he committed to doing his utmost to address their concerns.

According to Máire Uí Chomhaill from Cancer Flights and Services, the Minister emphasized that the issue is not related to funding but rather about identifying the appropriate mechanisms within existing legal frameworks. He indicated that discussions are ongoing with the airline involved, as well as with his officials, to find a resolution.

Despite the lack of concrete answers, campaigners left the meeting with a sense of urgency and determination. “Today’s meeting confirmed that Donegal’s message was received loud and clear. This route must serve as a reliable medical lifeline, not a gamble,” said Máire. Local representatives, including Deputies Pat the Cope Gallagher, Charles Ward, Padraig Mac Lochlainn, Pearse Doherty, and Senator Manus Boyle, were present to support the cause.

The Minister assured the delegation that he would maintain direct communication with Donegal’s representatives as the process evolves. As they returned to Carrickfinn, Máire expressed a renewed sense of unity and commitment among the patients, families, and public representatives who attended the meeting. “We will continue to stand together until same-day medical access is guaranteed in practice, not just in principle,” she stated.

The Department confirmed that the new flight schedule will be closely monitored for the first three months of operation. Following this period, the performance and reliability of the service will be evaluated to ensure that it meets the needs of the community effectively.
