Two Kiwifruits Daily: The Key to Healthier Skin and Wellbeing
Research conducted by scientists at the University of Otago suggests that consuming two kiwifruits daily could significantly enhance skin health and overall wellbeing. This finding, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, indicates that the vitamin C from kiwifruits can permeate all layers of the skin, including the outer epidermal layer, fostering collagen production and skin renewal.
According to Prof Margreet Vissers, of Otago’s Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, “We are the first to demonstrate that vitamin C in the blood circulation penetrates all layers of the skin and is associated with improved skin function.” The body requires a consistent supply of vitamin C since it cannot produce this essential nutrient independently. Apart from skin benefits, vitamin C is crucial for immune function, iron absorption, and wound healing.
Each kiwifruit provides over 60 mg of vitamin C, surpassing the daily requirement for adults. Notably, kiwifruits offer nearly double the vitamin C per 100 grams compared to oranges, making them an efficient source of this vital antioxidant.
Beyond promoting skin health, kiwifruits also confer various other health benefits. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, vitamin K, fibre, and natural enzymes, which can enhance digestion and improve sleep quality. Studies show that just two kiwifruits a day can yield notable health improvements.
Improving Sleep and Mood
Kiwifruits may also contribute to better sleep. Aoife Quinn, a registered dietitian at Orla Walsh Nutrition, notes that “Kiwi fruit contains serotonin and antioxidants, both of which play a role in supporting healthy sleep.” Research published in the Nutrients journal found that elite athletes who consumed two kiwis one hour before bed experienced better sleep quality.
Pairing kiwifruits with dark chocolate may enhance this effect. Quinn advises, “Pairing two kiwifruits with 1-2 squares of dark chocolate as a snack an hour before bed is a great way to help you drop off quickly.” This combination could be worth trying for those seeking improved sleep patterns.
Kiwifruits also have mood-enhancing properties. Prof Tamlin Conner from the University of Otago and her team reported in the British Journal of Nutrition that the fruit can elevate mood and vitality in just four days. The vitamin C content is a contributing factor, as deficiencies in this nutrient have been linked to increased rates of depression. “Small changes in their diet, like adding kiwifruit, could make a difference in how they feel every day,” Conner stated.
Digestive and Heart Health
The fibre content in kiwifruits, which includes soluble and insoluble types, supports gut health by reducing bloating and constipation. Clinical trials indicate that consuming one to three kiwifruits daily can alleviate these digestive issues. The natural enzyme actinidin, found in kiwifruits, enhances digestion as well. A comprehensive review of 75 studies indicated that foods like kiwifruits can provide relief from chronic constipation.
If consumers opt for the golden variety of kiwifruit, they may benefit even more; it contains up to 4 grams of fibre compared to 2-3 grams in the standard green kiwifruit.
Additionally, kiwifruits can promote heart health. As a rich source of soluble fibre, they help to eliminate “bad” LDL cholesterol and other unhealthy fats from the bloodstream. A study conducted by a team of Norwegian scientists revealed that eating two kiwifruits daily lowered levels of plasma triglycerides—fats in the blood that can increase heart disease risk—by approximately 13%.
Another investigation, featured in the Nutrients journal, found that participants who consumed two kiwifruits daily for seven weeks experienced significantly reduced blood pressure, which is a critical factor in heart disease risk management.
Allergy Considerations
While kiwifruits offer numerous health advantages, allergic reactions to them have become more common since their introduction into the Irish diet in the 1980s. The immune system can react to compounds in kiwifruits, triggering symptoms like tingling in the mouth and lips. In some individuals, the immune system confuses kiwi proteins with similar proteins found in latex, leading to a condition known as latex-fruit syndrome. Those experiencing severe allergic reactions should seek medical advice.
Incorporating two kiwifruits into one’s daily diet may not only improve skin health but also enhance overall wellbeing, making this small fruit a formidable ally in nutrition.
