Clonskeagh Mosque Reopens After Controversial Nine-Month Closure

The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland (ICCI) reopened its mosque in Clonskeagh, Dublin, on the evening of March 15, 2024, after a nine-month closure due to issues related to financial constraints and allegations of extremist ideology. This closure followed a violent incident during a meeting regarding the centre’s governance, which prompted the Al Maktoum Foundation, a Dubai-based charity funding the centre with approximately €2.5 million annually, to take action.

The path to reopening was marked by a protracted legal battle that concluded with a settlement last month. As part of the settlement, former ICCI director Dr Abdel Basset El-Sayed was ordered to cover the legal fees of other directors he accused of corporate criminality. The mosque’s reopening ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries and members of the local and national government, timed to coincide with Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.

Significant Reopening Ceremony

The reopening was formally marked by a ceremony led by Ahmad Tahlak, chairperson of the ICCI board. He emphasized the mosque’s mission as a “home of faith that contributes positively to the society in which it stands.” Tahlak stated, “Today marks not just an opening, but a new chapter. Clonskeagh mosque is part of Ireland’s social fabric – it belongs to this city, this neighbourhood and this country.”

Among the attendees were Neale Richmond, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, and local government leaders, including Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Richmond expressed his appreciation for the mosque’s significance, saying it serves “so many people of all faiths and none.”

Ambassadors from Morocco and the UAE, Lahcen Mahraoui and Mohammed Hmoud Al Shamsi, also joined the ceremony. Ambassador Al Shamsi underscored the need for a commitment to eliminate extremism and hate speech, stating, “Leave no room for extremism nor discord. Zero tolerance should be maintained towards discrimination and hate speech.”

A Fresh Start for the Islamic Community

The atmosphere at the reopening was one of hope and renewal. Zahid Jamil, a Dubai lawyer and ICCI board member, referred to the event as a “seminal moment” for the Irish Islamic community. He noted the overwhelming interest from worshippers eager to return, citing the oversubscription to a WhatsApp group for updates on the mosque’s reopening.

Dr Umar Al-Qadri, chair of the Irish Muslim Council, described the reopening as a “significant and joyful moment.” He expressed hopes that the future administration of the mosque would prioritize unity and inclusivity. “May this centre be a beacon of faith, knowledge, and compassion for generations to come,” he added.

In a statement following the reopening, the ICCI acknowledged its “path to recovery” thanks to support from Dubai donors and various branches of the Irish government. The centre now aims to foster an environment that welcomes diverse communities and encourages dialogue.
