Dún Laoghaire Earns International Recognition as Safe Evening Hub

Dún Laoghaire has received international recognition for its evening and night-time economy with the awarding of the Purple Flag accreditation. This accolade, facilitated by a UK-based organization, identifies town and city centres that meet high standards of entertainment, dining, culture, and hospitality from 5 PM to 5 AM. The recognition reflects the efforts of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to enhance the town’s reputation as a “safe evening destination.”

“This is a proud moment for Dún Laoghaire and for the wider county,” stated Cllr Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach of DLR. “The Purple Flag status highlights not only the vibrancy of our town after dark, but also our collective commitment to safety, inclusivity, and community wellbeing. It sends a clear signal that Dún Laoghaire is open, welcoming, and full of life.”

Community Initiatives Fuel Success

The Purple Flag accreditation evaluates safety, accessibility, and inclusivity for both residents and local businesses. The Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) conducts thorough assessments to award this recognition. According to Frank Curran, chief executive of DLR, the council partnered with local businesses, An Garda Síochána, and various community groups over an 18-month assessment period to achieve this accolade.

“This accreditation is a significant endorsement of the work underway across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown to support vibrant, safe, and sustainable town centres,” Curran remarked. He emphasized that the town’s offerings, including coastal walks, cultural venues, cafés, restaurants, pubs, festivals, and year-round events, contribute to its evolving identity as a welcoming and well-managed destination.

Collaboration and Community Focus

Colette O’Sullivan, chief executive of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Chamber of Commerce, noted that Dún Laoghaire is a “place to enjoy confidently after dark.” She described the accreditation as a testament to the remarkable collaboration across local business and community networks. “Purple Flag is about more than nightlife – it’s about creating a place where people feel confident, comfortable, and excited to spend time in the evening,” O’Sullivan explained.

The recognition not only enhances the town’s image but also fosters a sense of community and safety among residents and visitors alike. With its vibrant atmosphere and commitment to quality of life, Dún Laoghaire is poised to continue its development as a premier evening destination.
