Gardaí Honored for Sporting Excellence at Coiste Siamsa Awards

The 30th annual Coiste Siamsa Awards took place in Limerick on February 20, 2026, recognizing current and former members of An Garda Síochána for their significant contributions to sports. This event celebrates the achievements of officers who excel in various athletic disciplines while fulfilling their duties as full-time members of the police force.

The awards highlight the dual commitment of Garda members, who engage in sports at all levels, from amateur to elite national and international competitions. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána emphasized that such involvement aligns with the organization’s community policing ethos, promoting active participation in local communities through sports and recreation.

During the ceremony, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, who also serves as president of Coiste Siamsa, remarked on the importance of these awards. He stated, “These awards provide an important opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding sporting achievements of members of An Garda Síochána, as well as the positive role that sport continues to play within our organization and across the communities we serve.”

Among the honorees were nine members, both current and retired, who showcased their talents in various sports, including taekwondo, rowing, and golf. Additionally, the Garda College Hurling Team received a team award, underscoring the collaborative spirit fostered within the organization.

This year’s awards partnered with local charities, including the Children’s Grief Centre and the Limerick Mental Health Association, reflecting An Garda Síochána’s commitment to supporting community well-being alongside their sporting initiatives.
