Knights of St Columbanus to Serve 5,500 Christmas Dinners
The Knights of St Columbanus is set to provide Christmas dinners for over 5,500 individuals in need, including families and the homeless, on December 25, 2023. This marks the organization’s 101st annual Christmas Day Dinner. At the RDS in Dublin, 550 guests will enjoy a three-course meal accompanied by entertainment, while an additional 5,000 meals will be delivered by volunteers throughout the city.
More than 200 volunteers will come together to ensure the success of this event. The Knights of St Columbanus collaborates with several organizations, including Saint Vincent de Paul, Alone, the Simon Community, Age Action Ireland, and Dublin City Council to support vulnerable individuals on Christmas Day.
Free Meals and Festive Atmosphere
The Christmas Day Dinner is offered free of charge, with no reservations needed. For those traveling from the city centre, complimentary transport will be provided. Guests can look forward to a three-course meal, entertainment featuring Irish dancing and music, as well as a quieter area dedicated to families. Children will receive gifts to make the day even more special.
Founded in Belfast in 1915 by James K O’Neill, the Knights of St Columbanus has been hosting this Christmas Day dinner since 1924. The organization’s chairman, Trevor McNamara, highlighted the pressing need for such initiatives, pointing to the increasing number of families attending the event over the years.
According to recent figures, the number of people living in emergency accommodation in Ireland reached a record high of 16,766 in November. Furthermore, Saint Vincent de Paul anticipates receiving over 250,000 requests for assistance this year. McNamara noted, “Every time you look, you see a record number of homelessness,” emphasizing the ongoing challenge faced by many in the community.
Creating a Heartwarming Experience
Despite the closure of services like the Capuchin Day Centre on Christmas Day, the Knights of St Columbanus ensures that those in need are not left without support. The team strives to create a warm and festive atmosphere, transforming the RDS into a welcoming banquet setting.
McNamara expressed the joy of witnessing guests arrive cold and hungry, only to leave feeling full and content. “It’s the living embodiment of the Christmas spirit,” he remarked. The first Christmas Day Dinner, held in 1924, catered to 500 guests, predominantly homeless men, at Dublin’s Mansion House. Due to the growing demand, the event has been hosted at the RDS since 1994.
As the Knights of St Columbanus prepares for this year’s dinner, the initiative stands as a reminder of the community’s resilience and commitment to supporting those in need during the festive season.
