Pope Leo XIV Urges Compassion in First Christmas Urbi et Orbi
Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt call for compassion during his inaugural Christmas Day message, urging the global Catholic community to reject indifference towards those suffering from conflict and hardship. Addressing thousands from the loggia of St Peter’s Square on December 25, 2023, the first US-born pope emphasized the need for solidarity with the marginalized, including migrants and victims of war.
The traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing serves as an annual summary of global crises. Despite rain earlier during the papal Mass at St Peter’s Basilica, the weather cleared as Pope Leo XIV greeted the crowd in his native English and Spanish, reviving a multilingual tradition that his predecessor, Pope Francis, had set aside. The pope received enthusiastic applause from those gathered, reflecting the warmth of his message.
Emphasis on Peace and Justice
Pope Leo XIV highlighted the role of humility and responsibility in fostering peace. He stated, “If he would truly enter into the suffering of others and stand in solidarity with the weak and the oppressed, then the world would change.” His address called for justice and stability in regions such as Lebanon, Gaza, Israel, and Syria, while also urging prayers for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In his remarks, the pope extended his compassion to the victims of wars, political instability, and persecution across various countries, including Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He stressed the importance of dialogue to address the challenges facing Latin America and the need for reconciliation in Myanmar.
Solidarity with the Vulnerable
Pope Leo XIV’s message resonated deeply with those suffering from poverty and displacement. He identified with individuals facing extreme hardship, such as the residents of Gaza, the impoverished in Yemen, and the countless refugees crossing perilous borders. “In becoming man, Jesus took upon himself our fragility, identifying with each one of us,” the pope said, urging compassion for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
Additionally, he recognized the struggles of job seekers, especially young people and underpaid workers, as well as those imprisoned and seeking redemption. The pope’s inclusive message aims to inspire collective action among the faithful to aid the vulnerable in society.
Earlier in the day, Pope Leo XIV led a Christmas Day Mass at St Peter’s Basilica, beautifully decorated with floral garlands and red poinsettias. During his homily, he articulated the necessity of dialogue for achieving peace. “There will be peace when our monologues are interrupted and, enriched by listening, we fall to our knees before the humanity of the other,” he emphasized.
As the Catholic Church winds down its Holy Jubilee Year, which concludes on January 6, 2024, the pope’s message serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion and community during this festive season. With his inaugural Christmas address, Pope Leo XIV has set a tone of empathy and hope for his pontificate, encouraging all to participate actively in the pursuit of peace and justice.
